What you need

  • A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later).
  • macOS 26 or later.
  • Any camera: the built-in one, a webcam, an iPhone (Continuity Camera) or a Sony camera over USB.

Getting started

  1. Open ScreenGo. It sits in the menu bar; the window opens from the menu bar panel or the Dock.
  2. Choose what to record: a display, a window or an area. Turn the camera, microphone and computer sound on or off.
  3. Press Record, or use the shortcut (Shift Command R by default; change it in Settings).
  4. Press Stop. The recording appears in your library and opens in the editor.
  5. Export as MP4 or GIF, or copy the video to paste into a message.

Permissions

macOS asks for four permissions the first time each is needed. All can be changed later in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

PermissionWhat it's forIf something goes wrong
Screen & System Audio RecordingRecording the screen and the computer's soundSwitch ScreenGo on in that list, then record again
CameraThe camera bubble and previewSwitch ScreenGo on in the Camera list
MicrophoneYour voice and the level meterSwitch ScreenGo on in the Microphone list. With the lid closed, a MacBook's built-in mic records silence: use an external mic or open the lid
Speech RecognitionCaptions and the teleprompterSwitch ScreenGo on in the Speech Recognition list

The monthly question

About once a month macOS asks whether ScreenGo may keep recording your screen. It asks every screen recorder this. Click Continue To Allow and nothing changes. Settings > Recording in ScreenGo shows whether the permission is on.

Webcam for other apps

Switching this on installs a small camera extension. macOS asks you to approve it once, in System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions > Camera Extensions. After that, pick "ScreenGo Camera" in Zoom, Meet, FaceTime or Chrome. Other apps see exactly what ScreenGo's camera preview shows, look included. To remove it: Settings > Webcam > Remove.

Sony camera over USB

  1. On the camera: Menu > Setup > USB > USB Connection Mode > Remote Shooting.
  2. Movie mode on (not Cinematic Vlog or XAVC S-I DCI 4K).
  3. Plug the camera straight into the Mac with a USB-C data cable, then switch the camera on.
  4. Quit Sony's Imaging Edge Desktop and disconnect phone apps, which otherwise hold the camera.

Where your files are

  • Recordings: Movies > ScreenGo, one folder per recording (video, sound, mouse path and edit settings). Change the folder in Settings > Recording.
  • Exports: Movies > ScreenGo > Exports.
  • Nothing is ever deleted by ScreenGo. Anything you remove goes to the Bin.

Common questions

The recording has no sound.

Check that Microphone or Computer sound was on, and that the mic permission is granted. A closed MacBook lid means a silent built-in mic.

A recording stopped by itself.

The disk was nearly full or a file could not be written. What was recorded until then is kept and opens like any other recording.

The window doesn't open at login.

That's by design: ScreenGo starts quietly in the menu bar. Click its menu bar icon and choose Open ScreenGo, or click the Dock icon.

The editor says a background image can't be found.

The image file was moved or removed. Pick another background.

A GIF export says it's too long.

GIFs hold every frame in memory, so the limit depends on size, frame rate and your Mac's memory. Trim the video, or choose a smaller size or frame rate.
